Custom Packaging
At SAPHOY, packing begins with the object rather than the packaging. Every artwork, antique, sculpture or architectural component presents its own physical characteristics, vulnerabilities and logistical requirements, and our approach is to develop a packing methodology around those specific needs.
Our custom packing service covers everything from individual artworks and fragile objects to complex, oversized and irregularly shaped pieces. We consider the object’s construction, condition, dimensions, weight, centre of gravity, surface characteristics and any areas that require particular protection. We also consider how the object will be handled once it leaves our care, including loading, unloading, road transport, airfreight, storage and installation.
Where standard packing materials are insufficient, we develop bespoke internal support systems designed to immobilise the object while avoiding unnecessary pressure or contact with vulnerable surfaces. This can include custom-cut foams, padded supports, protective barriers, handling bases, internal bracing and purpose-built restraints. The objective is not simply to surround an object with protective material, but to control its movement and distribute loads appropriately throughout handling and transit.
For larger, fragile or particularly significant works, our packing methodology can incorporate a bespoke SAPHOY Safety Crate. These are designed and fabricated specifically for the individual object, with the internal structure engineered around its dimensions, condition and intended journey. From small framed works and antiques to sculpture, architectural components and large-scale installations, the crate becomes an extension of the packing system rather than simply an outer container.
Condition is an important part of this process. Existing cracks, repairs, loose components, exposed structures, delicate surfaces or previous interventions can all influence how an object should be supported. Where a condition report is available, we incorporate its findings into our handling and packing methodology. Where appropriate, we can also document condition before packing so that the object is recorded before it enters transport.
We are equally comfortable working with objects that present unconventional challenges. Some pieces cannot be lifted conventionally, cannot safely stand upright, or have no obvious load-bearing points. In these circumstances, we develop a handling and packing solution around the object, which may involve temporary support structures, specialist lifting equipment or fabrication undertaken specifically for the project.
Our packing can be designed for short-distance transport, long-term storage, road transit, airfreight or international export. Where international shipment is involved, crates can be manufactured to appropriate export specifications, including ISPM 15-compliant timber where required.
We also understand that packing sometimes needs to happen quickly. Our workshop allows us to fabricate bespoke protective systems and Safety Crates at short notice, with some projects capable of being completed within 48 hours depending on size, complexity and material requirements.
Ultimately, custom packing is about more than protection. It is about understanding the object, anticipating how it will behave during handling and transport, and designing a system that controls those risks from the moment it is collected until it reaches its destination.
